Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair follicle. Skin tone affects the safety profile of the device used, but it doesn't change who benefits from the treatment. Here's what actually determines candidacy:
Hair color matters more than skin tone. Laser hair removal works best on darker hair because the laser targets pigment in the follicle. Dark brown and black hair respond most effectively regardless of the skin tone they're sitting against. Very light blonde, gray, or white hair contains less pigment and may not respond as well, because there's simply less target for the laser to work with.
Active tanned skin requires timing. Freshly tanned skin, whether from sun exposure or self-tanner, temporarily increases melanin in the surface layer and can affect how the laser interacts with the skin. We recommend avoiding significant sun exposure on the treatment area in the weeks before your session. Hair in the treated area sheds gradually over the weeks following each session. Regrowth between sessions becomes finer and sparser.
